V-Express Steam Train with Tender

The V-Express Steam Train with Tender is a standout symbol of the Industrial Revolution and the Victorian age. Trains and transcontinental railroads opened up the interiors of entire continents, heralding an era of global technological and economic transformation. The minutely detailed, retro-futuristic open design of the V-Express wooden train model reveals the beauty of its moving components: including gears and a flywheel, a working cylinder-piston arrangement (a near-exact miniature copy of one of the main mechanical blocks of a real locomotive), a firebox with doors that open and close, a coupling mechanism, and a coal car with a closable hatch and raisable sides.

One full winding gives your V-Express enough energy to travel up to four meters (13 feet) along its track. You can change the direction of movement using a small lever on the side of the locomotive's body. The locomotive has three settings: forward, reverse, and idle. When in idle mode, you can observe the mechanism at work without worrying about the train taking off. Another exciting feature of your model is the ability to switch it to the reverse setting and watch as the V-Express rolls backward and automatically couples with its coal tender.

V-Express Steam Train features:

  • Rubber band-powered motor
  • Realistic cylinder-piston engine with moving parts
  • Covers up to 4 meters on a single winding
  • Three modes: forward, reverse, and idle
  • Direction switch to change train movement

I am writing about the UG460 puzzle. It must be an earlier version. It was fun building the train. The tender works perfectly. The only hard part was that most of the big pieces were very tight fits - sand and wax all inserts along with gears and wheels. Make sure the bottom section fits properly into the top section to make the gears match up. Recommend this train puzzle.

Bit disapponted - the rubber bands are hard to assemble as they get all bunched up and then unwieldy. Part #3 is weak, mine broke twice. Delays in getting replies maybe because of Xgiving holiday?

    Hey there.
Please fill the form for free parts and we will send them. Due to the high season reply through email could take longer time.
But parts will be sent, we see all requests for parts. To prepare you order could take 48-72 hours

Totally disappointed!!. Thought it would be a good hobby for my husband. Wrong!!! The pieces are very fragile, as you say. So far he's had to glue 3 pieces. Now on page 17 the hanger board states 92, as the instructions state. The pieces show--2 have # 82--2 have #82 & #86--2 have #83 & #86. Nowhere in the instruction book does it show these pieces. He's frustrated with this as am I. Did I get a wrong hanger board with the wrong pieces. Let me know what to do. He's getting ready to throw the whole thing away.

The gentleman I bought this for is so delighted and has been working on it since I gave it to him. It is a beautiful piece and will bring great joy to the residents in the skilled nursing facility he and his wife are in.

I've made a number of UGears models and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
The V Express Train arrived in good order, was very well packaged and I was anxious to start. However I found the 16 elastic band part to very challenging! After 3 attempts I had the 14 of the elastics sort of in place but in putting the next band in place broke " part 3" As well I found a few of the illustrations hard to decipher. Have requested a replacement part.

I like it very much, but i have one question. Is the set compatible with "rails", wich is compatible with "steam locomotive with tender"

Most ugears models are nothing short of amazing, I had some issues with this one though. The part that bends around the front is really thin and fragile. I got cracks here and there, though I managed to fix them with super glue I don't see why it couldn't use the standard thickness, I know from other models that they bend that much without problems.

Also, rubber bands dry out. But I have yet to come across a model where they have taken changing them into account in the design, the kit came with a big load of extra rubber bands, but opening it up and changing them isn't really feasible.

That said, it works and I love ugears models! Running out of places to keep them. I kind of want to give this away or sell it, it takes up a lot of space. But who wants a finished model kit?

The engineering on this kit is mind blowing , spent many happy hours ( some a little frustrating ) on this build , so much so , I immediately went on line to see if there was any more and was amazed by the range , like a kid in a sweetshop , I think I`ll go for the steam engine and beer barrel trailer .

overall I love your models but not this one, The operation of the drive gearing assembly turned out to be very hit and miss. The problem lay with 1st assy on page 11. The actuating arm that activates the drive gears via the gear lever was inconsistent in operation, sometimes it engaged properly but other times not. I tried various tensioning on the elastic bands but again not consistent results. Once I thought I got cosistency (more by luck than judgement) I continued to finish the assembly. First trial after tensioning the gear lever would move neither forward or reverse. I dismantled all the work done, double checked all assemblies and fit, re assembled and tried again, same problem again. I now have a very dissapointing static model, looks good, but that was not the object of the build. I genuinely feel the design of gear engagement leaves a lot to be desired. Sorry, but that's how it was for me, very dissapointed to say the least.

    Absolut top….
Nimm dir Zeit beim Zusammenbauen dann funktioniert alles. Ich bin begeistert von der Detailverliebtheit - einfach grandios

Although it is really cool and building it up to the part where the rods connecting the engine power wheels was fun, the rods holding the main drive wheel to the other drive wheels of the locomotive are too flimsy to provide the proper force to turn the wheels. They should be made of metal (intact I will be reordering the sodden parts, but in the meantime try and construct metal ones myself) pretty disappointing as I got this for a gift and spend close to a year just getting the engine completed.

I got the model from my colleagues for Christmas and am thrilled. The assembly went largely without problems, although some parts already sit very tight and if then a small material defect comes in addition (wood is a natural product!) ... crack! With a little fast drying white glue no problem to repair. The gears and axles are amazingly smooth, the roller bearing on the rubber band motor ingenious. Careful sanding of the surfaces that rub against each other and waxing of the gears and bushings pays off. A great model with lots of building and playing fun!

Hi there have bought this. Could anyone that has built it advise what tools and extra equipment (wax) you need ideally to complete the build?

    Thank you.

Fantastic model. Tis is my third (or fourth if you count the Truck and Trailer as two) and is the best yet. I agree that assembling the drive motor needs care and I did have a couple of bits break as they came out of the frame but superglue sorted that. I wouls recommend looking on UTube for the UGears assembly videos as they help if things get confusing. The train runs well ad covers the full length of track no problem. I agree, an extra track option would be good.

    Amazing!!!
Very good model, but is needed to facilitate the access to repair rubbers or gear area in order to apply more wax.
Also instructions to dismantle for repair.

I will bye my second model.... Truck + Rear box.

Cannot give it five stars, too fiddly by far with parts easily broken & spares ordered never came even though 3 times I requested the same items!! Instructions difficult to read in parts. Mine never actually moved under its own power, only by pushing. Disappointing result. How come there are no negative reviews, do you only show the positive reviews!!! Bet you don't show this review??

The quality and design of this product are amazing.
You will need to study the instructions very carefully as it easy to fit the parts the wrong way round but at least you can carefully take it apart and fit correctly. Strong fingers are required and lots of patience and definitely not for beginners. An option for more lengths of track would be appreciated

Loved building this kit, I’m going to buy a second one to convert the rubber band “motor” to electric. I’ll be needing more track!!

Take your time with the drive train, get even slack on each rubber band as you build, and ensure the rubber band measurements are correct. Also, I recommend sanding down the burrs on all gears and bearings before waxing, and take time to center the wheels so they rotate evenly. I used toenail clippers to cut the toothpicks to size. They make a nice clean cut without crushing the “axle”.

Gruss peter

This is a very good model and fairly easy to assemble although the instructions for the cow catcher tell you to put it on upside down and has to be moved later on in the assembly to get other parts in. As other modellers have mentioned always use loads of candle wax especially on the motion drive gears. Upon winding the mechanism on the second run the cocktail stick snapped and loco had to be virtually stripped to repair. BIG TIP cut a wire nail to size and install and you will have no further problems, i wish i had done that on the tram model as the cocktail stick on that on the drive has broken twice and is virtually impossible to replace. Maybe if you used metal pins for drive sections the models would be even better even if it meant spending a little bit more, take a look at ROKR models they use metal shafts and do not have the same problems.

UNREAL !!!! I loved doing this model . It was my first time building a mechanical model but I manged to get a working model in the end. You need a lot of patience and an eye for detail but in the end it is a very rewarding experience. I noticed other people had issues with the drive mechanism and I did find it challenging but it was completely do able. If i can offer a couple tips for people having a hard time with the gears ect. USE WAX you really cant use to much and it makes a huge difference and as you are setting in the rest of the gears along the length of the model make sure to adjust everything to align as you go. I found that as I was putting it together I moved other components. I cant wait to build another !
