V8 Engine

Assemble me. Fire up your passion for mechanics!

V8 engines, with their signature roar, are synonymous with automotive power. Thanks to the balanced arrangement of two banks of four cylinders in a V configuration, V8 engines produce less vibration than six-cylinder engines, allowing for a larger engine with greater horsepower. Patented in 1902 by French engineer Léon Levavasseur, the V8 is most widely known for providing the muscle in muscle cars, but did you know V8 engines were first used extensively in powerboats, and have even been used in airplanes and motorbikes?

Motorheads and modeling enthusiasts have been asking us for years for a complex engine model, and here it is – the Ugears V8 Engine! This one's for all you gearheads, motorheads, pistonheads, petrolheads, grease monkeys, and car connoisseurs. The V8 Engine from Ugears is a bit of a brag – from us to our customers when we designed it, and from you to your friends and family when you build it. The thing is, we get you. We share your love of all things mechanical. Our team is made up of people who simply have to know how things work, and we want to help others learn too.

The V8 Engine fully replicates all the main mechanisms in a real V8, including eight cylinders with pistons moving in cycle, with two cylinders "firing" for every 90 degrees of crankshaft rotation; 16 spring-loaded valves opening and closing as they are pushed by heads on the rotating camshafts, crankcase and valve train components linked with a timing chain, and a throttle valve on the intake manifold. Connect the model to a power source using a USB-C cable, then flip the on/off switch to "on" to watch your engine come to life, or manually set the V8 Engine in motion by twisting the knob located under the on/off switch.

V8 Engine features:

  • 1:6 scale engine model of an iconic internal combustion engine
  • Can be operated using an electric motor or manually by turning a knob
  • Electric motor styled as a generator
  • 8 cylinders with pistons moving in cycle
  • 16 spring-loaded valves opening and closing
  • Engine accessories: A/C compressor, alternator, power steering pump and water pump
  • Other realistic details: stylized exhaust manifolds, spark plugs, oil pan, dipstick, etc.

DIY wooden engine features:

  • Assembles without glue or tools
  • Assembled in stages—first the cylinder block, then the valve blocks
  • Step-by-step instructions in 11 languages
  • Replaceable rubber band on the front of the engine
  • 32-link timing chain with adjustable tension (using two tensioners)
  • Free spare parts upon request

Excellent ! Le moteur fonctionne très bien malgré quelques petites erreurs et imprécisions dans le plan de montage. Le moteur électrique est vraiment tout petit mais il fait bien le travail.

There are a couple of improvements that could be made in the instructions - motor polarity is wrong, not enough info on the force required to connect crankshaft parts, for example.
But it's a thing of beauty in concept and design, and it kept me quiet for hours!
The finished article works perfectly - smoothly and silently. One hint - it benefits from a slight spray of PTFE lubricant to make it run perfectly.
It sits, purring, on my desk as I type this. Thank you, Ugears.

A difficult build. I used up all the spare parts, but the finished project is impressive.

It was a fun project but there so manythings that could go wrong. I’m actually amazed it actually worked.

    Love it!

Although I've been an aeromodeller for decades, I've never attempted this kind of model before, and bought it to pass away the the quiet hours on a cruising holiday. it didn't disappoint.

The design and precision of the pre-cut ply parts is quite astonishing, as is the comprehensive nature of the instructions. The QR-linked videos did come in handy on a couple of occasions, so they're a real bonus.

As warned in the instructions, the timing chain took a bit of fettling and stretching to get it to fit comfortably over the gear trains, but all was OK in the end.

The finished model functions very nicely, and the pre-assembled micro motor/gearbox assembly is a little work of genius in its own right.

Would I recommend it? Yes, certainly - but it's not a kit for anyone with a short span of attention or for a bored child on a rainy afternoon. This is a real project in its own right, that took me around 15 hours of considered and careful assembly.

When building this engine I had a lit of difficulty with the chain. The Ugears team were happy to replace the problem parts. These worked perfectly. I am extremely pleased with this engine now it's complete. It can take some time but stick with it.

I seek challenging kits and this one delivered. I took extreme care to smooth and wax any parts that have relative motion and was rewarded by a first time smooth running.

Smaller than expected. Tons of sanding and waxing. Enjoyed the assembly. Finished job presentation is underwhelming.

I really wish this model had turned out. I have now busted THREE crankshafts. While waiting for replacement parts, I completed everything else. That includes the very difficult chain. Even when I got the crank shaft mounted (before the bottom piece that fits on it), it wouldn't move.

I have enough broken pieces of wood to start a small fire.

Im waiting on replacement parts but so far I really like the V8 engine. I was putting the ch a in cover piece on and I guess forced it and broke a couple of pieces. Im now waiting on replacement parts. Just wish the replacement parts would get here quicker. Other than that I really enjoy this build.

I thought it would be more difficult but enjoyed making it. Makes me think now in my 80's. Would be good to be able to use the V8 engine to drive another UGEAR model. I'm looking for a model steam roller (the type used years ago to roll tarmac on the roads) to work on this winter.

I bought this engine for a friend. He is very mechanical and also likes picture puzzles. I thought it would be great fun for him to work on, and great fun for me to observe his attitude and progress on the engine. We are both pleased with the engine. It is only now completed and it runs just fine but a for a few small adjustments here and there. My friend has been very engage, challenged, annoid, and proud of this achievement. Gary, my friend, said that once he started he found it difficult rto put down. His granddaughter is quite impressed and wants him to do a project for/with her.
    Sincerely, G.C. Westover

Having purchased this model in march, I was really looking forward to building it, as I have been a car mechanic for over 20 yrs.
This would be my 7th model to build and I was looking for something a bit harder to put together.
I was very disappointed with the quality of the parts, I spent about 10 hours building this model but could not get it to work.
I tried adjusting the timing chain 4 or 5 times but could not stop chain from missing the sprockets on the cam shafts.
The camshaft sprockets are not a tight fit, so caused the chain to break.
In the end I have up and threw on the bin.

Slight issue with chain tension but I grabbed one of the extra gears that was slightly larger and replaced the gear in the top middle, also slight issue with the chain catching in the same area due to a decorative gear having holes that the chain catches on sometimes

Very enjoyable to construct. Awsome format. Looking forward to doing more ugears models(although I feel I've started at the top end for complexity) Any suggestions for my next one? R2D2 already ordered.

I ordered this as a Christmas gift and it arrived late due to customs screening. The customer support team stayed on top of it the entire time until we got the order. It was 100% worth the wait. Husband was thrilled.

    Bonjour,
Le vilebrequin se bloque et risque de casser et aussi ce qui pousse les soupapes se décale et bloque le système malgré les recommandations pour le montage. Je ne pourrai pas le faire fonctionner correctement. Je suis déçu.

    Love it!

Although I've been an aeromodeller for decades, I'd never attempted a kit of this type before, so I bought this kit to build on a cruising holiday for a bit of a challenge in the cabin down time. It didn't disappoint.

I'm amazed by the design and precision of the laser-cut ply pieces. The instructions are well presented, with the QR code-activated videos providing a little clarity for the trickier bits.

The wooden timing chain needed a modicum of fettling and stretching, to get it to run smoothly over the gear trains, but that's covered in the instructions.

The finished model is quite a conversation piece now it's completed, and runs smoothly on USB power - the motor's pre-assembled little gearbox is beautiful in itself.

Would I recommend it? Certainly, but it's not a quick build for those with limited patience, or as a diversion for a bored child. This is a project in its own right, and needs care and patience to complete.

I bought the V8 engine for my husband for Christmas, and he loves it! He is a retired journeyman machinist, and it really appeals to his precise nature! And what's even better, it will work once he gets it all assembled.
